Music Stuff

I have been doing a lot of music stuff recently, from recording to writing to getting new stuff for my studio.

I ordered Toontracks EzDrummer to help me do drum stuff. I will let you know how that works out. This will be the 3rd drum related software product that I have purchased for recording. Everything starts with the drums so it has probable the biggest mark on the recording besides the vocal, which is the next thing that I have to tackle.

I went back to organize me songs on my computer last night, and just opening some of those old mixes made me wince. Something tells me I will be revisting those to clear up some lingering issues. As you learn more about doing this kind of stuff it’s inevitable that you would want to go back and correct mistakes that you made earlier.

I also have gone back to using IK Multimedias T-Racks mastering software. I had problem earlier with it working with the hardware that I had, but now that I have updated hardware it seems to be working good.

My next purchase will probable be Universal Audio plugins, but that is something that I need to save up for among other things.

Birthday

I had a birthday over the weekend where I turned 29 for the 8th straight year.

Alanna is the best and got me a sweet safety razor so I don’t have to keep paying Gillette their blood money just to keep shaving. I also got a Who biography “Before I get Old”. I seem to be on a bit a rock n roll biography kick these days. Maybe I will read “Hammer of the Gods” and “No one here gets out alive” next just to get them all out of the way at the same time.

We went to Le Colonial for dinner on friday and although it was great, we made the mistake of ordering the same thing that we had last time. When you do this, it can never be as good as the first time so I plan to never order the same thing from a restaurant like this. Always look forward. OK, maybe one more time with the Salt and Pepper prawns but that is my final time. Really.

I also got some CD’s. We are on kind of a 70′s kick right now so I got “Let it Bleed” by the Stones the Who compilation Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy and the first Eagles record. Alanna has been on a Kinks retrospective so this completes our way back machine trip.

Thanks to everyone who called, took me to lunch and punched me in the arm.

CDs are small. There’s no stature to it.

Dylan says that digital records sounds like crap. Well I kind of agree. Although I would like to make a couple of points.

First, is that all the equipment used when he made records was used to artificially make up for things in the recordings that were unable to be captured the same way the human ear is able to hear them. Now we are better able to capture those frequencies and do not need to artificially inflate them. So now we capture them exactly as they should be and we think they sound like shit, because we have been artificially inflating them for years.

Second, peoples stereos are better and worse all at the same time. Better in respect that they can have huge selections of music at their finger tips and worse in the respect that they listen to things on tiny speakers with huge amounts of compression and loud as shit.

Third, songwriting as a craft of american music has all but evaporated. People don’t dance. Hell people don’t even listen to music any more. It’s just a constant background music.

They are bombarded with it every day. In the car, at work, in the elevator, in the bathroom. People can not tell what is good music because they do not even realize that music is even playing when you ask them. There is a whole generation of people growing up for whom music is important yet unmemorable.

People who say they love music, yet don’t buy records. People who get attached to songs yet can’t remember the name of the song or who made it. People who consume music like TV.

“Whatever is on is OK, as long as I am watching something”.

Fourth and most important, everybody is on the air.

If anybody with some money (Hi, I’m Paris Hilton) can make a record. What makes your record any different than the millions of new songs that I can possible hear every day. The equipment and ability to make a hit record gets cheaper and cheaper and the means to get that music directly into the hands of the listener is easier and easier. Why would people rely on traditional means of distribution in order to get the music that they want to hear, if those channels have been nothing but hostile to the end user?

The revolution will not be televised. The fact that Dylan doesn’t listen to digital music, or thinks that it sounds like shite, means that he is missing out on one of the biggest reasons to be listening to music in the 21st century.

There is music everywhere. There is no longer that filter that the major labels provided because the major labels have proven again and again that they are tone deaf. If you want to find good music you have to be your own A&R rep.

And last but not least, Dylan you are a pompous tard. I love your music and all, but if you think everybody in the world should be listening to your records on pristine vinyl through $10,000 audiofile setups like you have while you record in the studio you are crazy. People know even less about stereo equipment than they did back in the sixties. Hell, these days most kids can’t even setup a stereo. There are people who have been listening in mono for years because they don’t even know that one of their speakers has been unplugged.

Tequila Night with the Band

We had a sweet. mexican food night over at Jhina’s house last night.

Always stay with the good tequila. If someone says, hey it doesn’t matter lets just use Cuervo. They are retarded.

Scott gets tequila angry.
