Right on John Kerry

SF Gate Article

This is one of the best things I have heard come out of John Kerry’s mouth. Right on John… Take no shit from the desk jockey generals.

He said he had been criticizing Bush, not the “heroes serving in Iraq,” and said the president and his administration are the ones who owe U.S. troops an apology because they “misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it.”

“This is the classic GOP playbook,” Kerry said in a harshly worded statement. “I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did. I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium.”

New Speakers

I got some new Cambridge SoundWork speakers for my computer at work. I have a small pair at home and they are pretty great.

I don’t know what happened over there, but these ones are a bit retarded. They sound fine, but whoever engineered how the wires plug into the individual speakers should be taken out into the parking lot and beaten with a sack full of soda cans.

They have these little metal plates that act as stands for the speakers but the stands themselves cover the standard “red” “Black” wire connectors that stereo speakers have. Nice going….

My second rant about these speakers is that it came with a wall wart so big I’m going to need a separate power strip just to plug it in. It’s so big that it easily takes up 3-4 plugs on a regular extension cord.

Why is it that every electronics manufacturer thinks their piece of equipment is the only piece of electronics that you own? Those plugs waste so much power and they are outdated. So much for state of the art huh…

Public Glass

Alanna and I went to the party at Public Glass after her open studio show on Saturday. Their studio is attached to her building on Yosemite.

It was cool, for $20 you got to pick out a hand blown glass mug and then drink
beer all night as you watch people make glass. A fun time. We got some cool glasses that we are very fond of.

Why we fight

Watched “Why we fight” a movie by Eugene Jarecki last night. The footage of Eisenhower talking about the military industrial complex is just plain eerie. The movie won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance in 2005.

Great quote from the movie:
“When war becomes profitable, your going to see a lot more of it.”

Stop saying “Compelling”

I really wish people in “Marketing” would stop using this word. It has lost all meaning. This is the word people use when they don’t know what they want.

Compelling is a 12 year old with a handgun pointing it at his teacher or a daring
rooftop rescue. It is NOT your flowchard diagram. It is NOT a red icon instead of a cornflower blue one.

I am reminded of that line from The Princess Bride:
“You keep saying that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.”

Quote

Good quote for the day and I think it applies to all of us who work themselves up over things that have not even happened yet, and probable never will.

New Ray LaMontagne

I got the new Ray LaMontagne record “Til the sun turns black” another great record with some amazing sounds again produced by Ethan Johns.

I am reading “Before I get old”, a book about the Who by Dave Marsh and I had heard about Glyn Johns as a producer and engineer for a long time. I guess I finally put it together that Glyn Johns is Ethan Johns father. I guess if you learn from one of the best you end up being one of the best.

Glyn Johns produced and engineered my favorite Who record “Who’s Next?”

Recording

Did some recording over the weekend and I was glad that the Blue Angels didn’t make an appearance. It was kinda hit or miss all day. I think they did a few fly overs but luckily I was not recording at the time.

The city was packed with people from the air show as well as a football game, a bluegrass festival in the park and it was super sunny out.

Alanna’s show went pretty good and she came home and passed out after a nice dinner.

Universal Audio Plugins

I got the Universal Audio plugins and I thought I would be using them all over, but unfortunately so far I have found them to be dull and kinda muddy. I have to say that I got the project pak which is kinda the smallest amount of them that you can get, so maybe all the cool ones are in the other packs.

The ones that I am using are:

1176SE Limiting Amplifier
Pultec EQP-1A EQ
RealVerb Pro

I hope to get into using them some more on songs that I am mixing in the next couple of weeks.
