No commentsFiguring out the Beatles
If you have ever wondered how the Beatles got that weird sound at the beginning of “Hard Days Night”, it seems its taken over 40 years, a professor and some advanced analytical modeling to figure it out.
Little known fact is that the Beatles (Ringo really) used the phrase “Hard Days Night” to describe playing gigs. The director Richard Lester heard the term and thought it would be a good title for the film. He then asked John and Paul to go and write a song with that title. They found him the next morning and played him the song. Most people have differing opinions on how the song title and film came together, including the Beatles themselves but I believe the version from the Bob Spitz book, (The Beatles by Bob Spitz).
No commentsJoe the plumber and other McCain gaffs
John McCain is just shooting himself in the foot every time I turn around.
- Chooses Sarah “Caribou Barbie the Maverick” Palin
- No Palin news conferences
- Loses debates
- Constantly talks about Joe the Plumber, who is not a plumber
- Keeps up negative attacks, even after they don’t work
- Real America / Fake America
- Palin wardrobe
People want a president to be stable, even tempered. People loved Clinton and Reagan when they were running and in office because they smiled, even when someone was clearly going after them. I’m just waiting for McCain to show up drunk to a rally and start swearing at the crowd. Then maybe fall down and wet himself.

No commentsWarren Buffet
With all the upheaval in the stock market I hear people in panic talking about selling their stocks and mutual funds. People always say that Warren Buffet is a great businessman and investor yet they always forget one of his biggest rules about investing.

Getting Better
When Alanna and I got married, I was rushing around before the wedding moving stuff and getting dressed and checking on arrangements and the whole time I was singing this song under my breath. Here we are 2 months to the day after the wedding and I still have it in my head.
Getting Better – Beatles Sgt. Peppers
It’s getting better all the time
I used to get mad at my school
The teachers who taught me weren’t cool
You’re holding me down, turning me round
Filling me up with your rules
I’ve got to admit it’s getting better
A little better all the time
It can’t get no worse
I have to admit it’s getting better, it’s getting better
Since you’ve been mine
Me used to be a angry young man
Me hiding me head in the sand
You gave me the word, I finally heard
I’m doing the best that I can
I’ve got to admit it’s getting better
A little better all the time (It can’t get no worse)
I have to admit its getting better, it’s getting better
Since you’ve been mine (Getting so much better all the time)
It’s getting better all the time
Better
It’s getting better all the time
Better Better Better
I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man, I was mean but I’m changing my scene
And I’m doing the best that I can
I admit it’s getting better
A little better all the time (It can’t get no worse)
Yes, I admit it’s getting better, it’s getting better
Since you’ve been mine (Getting so much better all the time)
It’s getting better all the time
Better Better Better
It’s getting better all the time
Better Better Better
Getting so much better all the time
Is it OS X or OS TEN?
Someone asked me recently is Apples operating system was pronounced OS X (as in the letter X) or OS TEN (as in the roman numeral). I blurted out X the letter, even though most people at Apple and in other circles are calling it TEN.
If you look at the wikipedia entry for OS X, you will see a pronunciation guide right next to it that says it should be TEN. So for the Apple rubber stampers out there, I guess you win. I mean it is all still part of the 10.xxx family, but hear me out here.
Ten what?
Apple’s OS has had so many versions of TEN that they have all had to have their own CAT name to go along with it. Ever since September 2001.
- Mac OS X Public Beta “Kodiak”
- Mac OS X v10.0 “Cheetah”
- Mac OS X v10.1 “Puma”
- Mac OS X v10.2 “Jaguar”
- Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther”
- Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger”
- Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard”
- Mac OS X v10.6 “Snow Leopard”
How about XSan or XGrid and maybe XServe? Is it TENSan or TENGrid or TENServe? Have I been mispronouncing these products as well? Just take a look at the XSan landing page. Right in the title one of the capital Xs is X as in the letter, while the other is X as in the roman numeral.. If the same naming applies to the lower case “i” in other Apple products, does that mean that their actual name is “one” as in OnePhone and OneCal or how about OneTunes… Doesn’t really work that way does it.
So when people talk about OS TEN and most of them talk about it in a: “Our software supports MAC OS TEN” kinda way… Which TEN are they referring to? This is like saying “Our software supports Windows”… Well that is a very vague phrase… And in software support the version of the OS is VERY IMPORTANT… How about Windows? When was the last time your version of Windows was important when purchasing software or hardware?
Windows what? 3.1? Windows ME? Windows 2000, XP sp1, XP sp2, XP sp3, Vista. Imagine if the entire Windows OS line was all referred to as windows. How could you tell what would work with your system. Its all in the fine print…
While I think the old roman numeral thing is nice, what happens after their through with 10? In ten years are we going to have an OS that looks like those super bowl commercials. I can’t even tell what that logo says anymore. Mac OS 11? This one goes to Eleven? XI? XI.5?
I think that they should move to the letter X because it has a beauty and mysteriousness to it. (eg. Racer X, X marks the spot, Compound X) It will make the move to successive versions easier and it will keep it all in the Apple Family. Maybe I just like X…. Roman numerals just remind me of Rocky Films. Maybe they should just stick with the cat names. I’d be down with that.
